We loved the homely atmosphere and the cozy single room we stayed in. The toilets and showers were always available, and we never had to wait. And let's talk about Pipi, the adorable cat that stole our hearts! We couldn't wait to get back to the hostel just to see her. The location was also excellent, just a minute's walk from Akaroa stop and about 15 minutes from the Intercity stop. we had a fantastic experience and would definitely recommend this hostel.

The hostel provided a cozy atmosphere with a large kitchen and living room. The kitchen was well-stocked with basic cooking essentials and there was a BBQ in the garden. The other long-term residents were friendly, making it easy to socialize. Additionally, the location of the hostel was convenient for exploring the city center and had free parking on the street.
The check-out time was a bit early at 10am, which could be inconvenient for some guests. However, it didn't affect my plans as I was picking up my campervan.

Chester St Backpackers was a cozy and cute place, more like a big shared house than a typical business hostel. The owners made an effort to get to know their guests, but also respected their privacy. The shared room I stayed in was the largest capacity option available, great for a comfortable and quiet night's sleep. it was one of my favorite hostels in New Zealand.
The hotel breakfast could be improved with a greater variety of options.

Homely environment: The hostel offered a warm and friendly atmosphere that made me feel right at home, surrounded by like-minded travelers. It was a refreshing break from the typical bustling backpacker hostels.
Limited storage/hooks in shared room: While the overall warm feeling of the house was incredible, there could have been a bit more storage or hooks in the shared room. It would have been nice to have a designated place to hang clothes and towels instead of leaving them on the floor.

Lovely homely atmosphere, feels like staying in somebody's house rather than a hostel. Great vibes, could easily stay longer. Super comfy and home-like. Clean kitchen and cozy lounge room couches. Large kitchen and dining room, fully stocked with basics for cooking. Enjoyable stay with friendly long-term hostel guests. Calm, colorful, and cozy ambiance. Owners try to get to know you, but also respect privacy. Quiet at night, not crowded like other backpackers. Likely my favorite hostel in New Zealand.
Felt like family, nothing was too much trouble.
